260 Wellesley Street East Update #1

Updated Wednesday, January 23, 10:30am

Yesterday afternoon I was informed by a representative for 260 Wellesley Street East that a flood in the building had resulted in a temporary Toronto Hydro service shut-off to allow for an investigation into the source of the water. The City Manager's Office flagged this immediately, given Toronto's experience with the electrical fire at 650 Parliament Street, and a preemptive emergency response mobilization was initiated to ensure staff are available to respond to any development.

Toronto Fire will be leading the response on-site for at least the next 24 hours. While they do not anticipate power will be restored within the next 48 hours, they will not be issuing an evacuation order at this time. A number of orders are being put in place to ensure the safety of residents at 260 Wellesley Street, including fire watch and check-ins to ensure residents are in good health. Toronto Fire will be assisting with these services.

At 8:00 am this morning, I met with the building owners, Mayor, Office of Emergency Management, Fire, Police and senior divisional staff to discuss the situation at 260 Wellesley East. All hands are on deck and planning is ongoing for all contingencies.

It was made clear to the owners that they are responsible for the safety and well-being of their tenants. The City will assist, as needed, and ensure that communications are clear and up-to-date as we have so far. It's important that the emergency response is coordinated.

Accommodations will be determined for tenants, in the event of any evacuation orders. Tenants are urged to contact nearby friends and family to see if they can provide short-term accommodations, should the need arise. More information will be provided later today. My office is working in coordination with the Mayor, Office of Emergency Management, Fire, Police and senior divisional staff in managing this emergency. I will be providing updates as developments unfold.
